Steve Elliott
Hello my name is Steve Elliott My Dad Jimmy Elliott owned Naiad ....sailed it back single handed one night from Peel to Maryport in July 1972.We did some Cod Banging.... and took lots of fishing parties from the North East too...My Dad and I survived the Great Storm in her...and we were very Lucky to get her home that Spring day.We had taken a Retired Sea Captain out....who was wanting to buy her....my Dad did not want to sell...but the Gentleman was very keen...and my Dad out of politeness offered to take him out...my Dad did not want to take the Captains wife with us as he considered a woman aboard bad luck...as was whistling at sea...but did take her.We set out on the most beautiful calm day...but near Silloth we saw the Storm closing in on us us from the Scotch side looking toward Silloth....we fired up the Lister and tried to out run it... but it caught is in minutes...gave us a real hiding....my Dad and the Sea Captain really struggled to get us home....I was 11 years old I think. My Dad and the Captain were donning Oil Skins and were covered in Frost almost in seconds...as the later called Freak Storm caught up to us....I took shelter in the cabin with the Captains wife...she was crying and in a real state.the Sea was literally bubbling and there were Water Spouts all around us...Rain and Hail like I have never seen since.Getting Naiad between the piers was the most difficult...onlookers said you could see the prop spinning as we were tossed from the sea...as we moored her the Coastguard came and said my Dads friend was missing and we must go back out...as my Dad prepared to go....I saw an incredible sight...it was a Sea King !... and he was told he did not have to go...I think the little boat was lost that day...because when we went for a walk along the shoreline the next day...we saw a boat broken up on the sands...and my Dad was very upset...but my memory is more vague on this part...it was a very long time ago..My Dad was not easily scared...and had served in the Black Watch as a young man...but I overheard him say to my Mother that he thought we were going to be all lost to the sea that day.My dad sold the boat to another Maryport fisherman...but he badly neglected her... and my Dad was heartbroken as he saw Naiad go into disrepair... my Dad had rebuilt...painted and polished her every part over a number of years...she was the Pride of the Harbour...even the ropes were always left spooled on deck.Anyway folks....my wife said it looks like War and Peace so will end there....pics will be added below.Best Regards.Steve. ...
